Astronomers have discovered a unique radio galaxy called RAD-BAARG that looks like a giant bow and arrow. They believe its unusual shape is caused by the galaxy moving at supersonic speed through a galaxy cluster, creating an enormous cosmic shock wave. The shock becomes visible because it is illuminated by one of the galaxy’s powerful radio jets. The discovery was first made by a citizen scientist using data from the LOFAR radio telescope. If confirmed, it could help scientists better understand how galaxies evolve and interact with their surrounding environment over millions of years.
